This is a great adventure story with a second story of lost love (Sea Change). Most of us cannot get away from the insane society we live in. A few do. So we live vicariously through them. What would it be like to live alone facing the challenges of the ocean? How would you solve the problems that face you? This is what you will learn from this book. You will see superhuman effort and ingenuity that we all would like to have. The perhaps unintended sub-plot of a lost love is fascinating too. The author speaks from the beginning about his love J. Why he does not use her full name (Jane in the dedications) is a question for psychologists, but not too difficult to surmise. J was with him on many voyages. They fought constantly, though he never says what about. Finally she leaves him.In the final chapters he gives the reason, though not with intent. He speaks of the alpha wolf. It is not, of course, the alpha wolf, but the alpha male wolf, who brooks no difference of opinion, whose authority is absolute and never to be questioned. The beta female wolf understands all this, but it does not work well for humans. Just as the alpha male wolf cannot change his disposition, human alpha males cannot, or choose not to. Peter appears to realize this and longs for his lost love, knowing that he will not change. Excellent read. Fast paced, Nichols keeps your attention. Amazing story of how he bravely journeyed across the Atlantic alone, only to later have to abandon ship. Highly recommend.
